The banking system in Bangladesh consists of several types of banks, including commercial banks, specialized banks, Islamic banks, foreign banks, and microfinance institutions. The Bangladesh Bank, which is the central bank of Bangladesh, regulates and supervises the banking system in the country.
Commercial banks in Bangladesh are divided into four categories based on their ownership structure: state-owned banks, private-sector banks, foreign banks, and specialized banks. The state-owned banks are responsible for providing banking services to government organizations and implementing government policies related to finance and banking. Private sector banks are owned and operated by private individuals or institutions, and they cater to a wide range of customers from individuals to businesses. Foreign banks are branches or subsidiaries of foreign banks that operate in Bangladesh. Specialized banks are designed to meet the specific needs of certain industries or sectors, such as agriculture or small and medium-sized enterprises.
